I wanted more storage in my mudroom, so decided to build a built in bench with lots of storage to hide all the mess. This has been very practical and useful over the years.
Wood type: plywood and knotty pine (optional)
Finish: White semi-gloss paint with a water based polyurethane
Hardware: 1-1/2 Inch Nickel Piano Hinge, hooks (optional) and a lid supports.

The piano hinge has been installed. If I were to redo this project, I wouldn't have used a solid piece of pine for the lid. I would of joined a few pieces of pine together since this board was warped slightly. Or I would of just used plywood like the rest of the project.
Since this is a built-in project, I can't make universal plans that would meet everyone's requirement. First steps is to measure your space and create the rectangular box. The four walls are 16" in height and I joined them with pocket screws. I used 1 x 4 stiles for the decorative face. Don't worry if there is a small gap between wall and the box, the stiles & rails will cover up the gap.
I ran a 2x4 across so that I could attach the lid. I didn't end up using these hinges because they left a 1/2" gap when the lid was closed. I switched it up with a "Piano" hinge which you can find at home depot. I also added a piece of plywood in the center (optional) to help prevent the box from warping.
The shelves are optional but I think they are a nice touch. I bough three wooden braces from Home Depot but you could easily make your own if you wanted to save some cash.
I then added bead board, trim, hooks and painted everything white and applied a poly coat.
I also added 2 lid supports from Lee Valley so that lid would close slowly.
