I had an empty space in my Mudroom so I decided to build an armoire (fancy name for cabinet) to store the vacuum and some other items.
Wood type: Birch Plywood, Pine and Birch for doors
Finish: Minwax Dark Walnut and Polyurethane
Hardware: 6 Hinges for doors and two handles
Materials:
- One 1/4 birch 4x8 sheet (door panels and cabinet backing)
- Seven 8' Pine 1x3 (for rails, stiles and hinge rails)
- 1.5 Birch 4x8 plywood sheets ( shelves and wall structure)
Finish: Minwax Dark Walnut and Polyurethane
Hardware: 6 Hinges for doors and two handles
Materials:
- One 1/4 birch 4x8 sheet (door panels and cabinet backing)
- Seven 8' Pine 1x3 (for rails, stiles and hinge rails)
- 1.5 Birch 4x8 plywood sheets ( shelves and wall structure)
The first step was to construct the base and kick plate. The cabinet will sit on top of this.
Then I built the side walls and added a horizontal piece on the right hand side for support and to prevent warping. I screwed this piece in with pocket screws, I would have created a mirror image on the left but I wanted more space to hang my vacuum.
You will want to drill holes to mount shelves. I also ironed on veneer to the edges of the birch plywood.
The next step was to create stiles and rails using pine 1x3's for the doors. I bought 1/4" birch for the panels. I created a dado with my table saw, installed the panels with glue. I used my Kreg Jig for the joints and used plugs to fill the pocket screw holes. The exact dimensions for rails and stiles is below.

The next step was to create these vertical side rails (don't know the proper term) in blue. I installed 6 hinges (3 on each side) to attach the doors. In the diagram below, the width is 1.5". I made mine a bit wider so that it would appear like a built in, I also made the kick plate a bit wider.
Project Complete!
