This is my DIY for a farmhouse bed. Inspired by Anna white and Pottery Barn. I wanted a sturdy look and used 4 x 4 posts and decided to make a king!
Wood type: knotty pine
Finish: Minwax Dark Walnut with a water based polyurethane Optional Hardware: Mortise-Free Bedlocks, 2x4 joist hangers
I used my Kreg Jig to create pocket screws to attach the headboard & footboard to the 4x4 posts. As you can see below the 1x4 trim piece will cover the pocket screw holes.
The photo below is the headboard assembled without the top pieces. I obviously had to do some more sanding and I used wood filler for the cracks.
I started working on the headboard and footboard first. They are the same style except that you don't have to install trim or stain the backside of the headboard since nobody will see. The photo below is the footboard, I've applied glue and have clamped the last few trim pieces
Most DIY plans online, instructed to scew the rails directly into the posts. I didn't want to do this since I may disassemble the bed a few times over the years. So I purchased some Mortise-Free Bedlocks from Lee Valley. They work quite well and I was pleased.
I wanted to save some $$ and built a platform so that I wouldn't have to purchase a box spring. I decided to paint and put some polyurethane on the cheap 7/16 OSB wood just to make it a little prettier. I cut the sheets into three 24" wide pieces so that it would be easier to assemble and take apart.
